Heart Children New Zealand thanks the many Volunteers & Public in your support of children with heart conditions during our 2005 Awareness Week.

Heart Children Awareness Week was held from 22nd - 29th May 2005. During Awareness Week, Heart Children New Zealand members and parents, along with staff from Bank of New Zealand, co-ordinated a variety of awareness and fundraising activities.
In 2004, Heart Children Awareness Week was successful in raising over $500,000, and we hope to have raised a similar amount this year.
Monies raised during Heart Children Awareness Week will go towards establishing a Research Fellowship in the Paediatric Cardiology Department at Starship Hospital.
The aim of the Fellowship is to undertake research into the cause and treatment of life threatening heart problems in children in New Zealand.
Regional branches of Heart Children NZ held various activities through out the week nationwide, with a selection of photos available by clicking the photos below.

A congenital heart condition is the most common serious birth abnormality in New Zealand needing ongoing medical intervention.
600 children born in New Zealand this year will have a congenital heart condition.
Each year 30 - 40 children with a heart defect lose the battle to survive
Approximately 400 children this year will undergo heart surgery
More than 1,000 children a year are treated at Paediatric Cardiac Unit currently located at Starship Hospital
70% of all heart surgery involves stopping the child’s heart
10-11 people work in the paediatric cardiac surgery team
On average heart surgery takes 290 minutes or 17,400 seconds

This year, Heart Children New Zealand celebrated its Awareness Week with extra help from thousands of New Zealand school children.
Heart Children New Zealand with the support of principal sponsor, Bank of New Zealand aimed to try and find out why so many New Zealand children are born with a heart defect.
With the support of over 50 schools from all around the country, Heart Children New Zealand sought to raise over $500,000 during awareness week. Monies raised will provide essential services for heart children and their families and will help establish a Paediatric Cardiac Research Fellowship. The Research Fellowship will aim to uncover some of the answers to the many questions plaguing heart children and their families.
Children with heart defects make up the largest group of chronically ill children needing ongoing treatment in New Zealand. Approximately 400 children this year alone will undergo some form of heart surgery. Every year 30-40 children with a heart defect lose their battle to survive.
Heart Children New Zealand was thrilled with the response from schools to their coin trail photograph competition. “Schools really got behind the campaign. It’s great to see so many children helping other children,” says Garth Halliday, General Manager Heart Children New Zealand.
Schools were tasked with creating a heart-shaped coin trail, and photographing it with as many children in it as possible. The photos were then entered into a prize draw. Prizes were awarded for: best photo, biggest heart-shaped coin trail and the most funds raised.
The Paediatric Cardiac Research Fellowship will undertake research into the cause and treatment of life threatening heart problems in children in New Zealand. Key areas of research have been identified as:
Safer cardiac surgery with better outcomes
Better ways of detecting and treating heart muscle damage
Detection and treatment of life threatening heart rhythm problems
Treatment of rheumatic heart disease.
